Bail Denied For Chinese National

The Chinese national currently facing corruption related charges in the Suva Magistrates Court had her second bail application refused on August 13.

Ling Gao was charged earlier this year by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) with one count each of Bribery and Possession of Forged Document.

Resident Magistrate Kashyapa Wickramasekara labelled the application for bail as a frivolous one and refused it in the interest of justice.

Furthermore, the Court noted that the accused is already on a Warrant of Detention and Removal Order by the Permanent Secretary for Immigration and that there was no change of circumstance to justify a second bail application.

FICAC Counsel Anaseini Lomani appeared for Prosecution with the Accused being represented by Isireli Ramanu.

The accused is to be further remanded in custody pending trial for the above mentioned charges.

Twenty-eight days was given for Appeal.

Background

Ling Gao is charged alongside two other individuals for allegedly offering $100.00 to an Exemption Officer at the Department of Immigration to alter the Work Permit on her Chinese passport in January of this year.

The other two accused in this matter are Parvir Rattan who faces one count of Bribery and the above mentioned officer Sereima Rokovada faces one count each of Bribery and Using a Forged Document.
