The appointment of National Federation Party MP, Prem Singh as trustee of a committee in Nadi, has come under the spotlight.

This came after questions were raised by certain financial members of the Nadovi Cemetery Committee.

They labeled the appointment as ‘insignificant’.

The cemetery caters for more than 2000 people residing in settlements within Malamala and Malolo Transmitter Road.

The financial member fees every year is $5 and cremation or burial fees is $10.

Korovuto/Nadovi Advisory Councilor, Sunil Sharma claimed the committee over the past five years held its annual general meetings without informing members.

“At this stage we don’t even know who are the people holding posts and trustees of this committee,” Mr Sharma said.

“We need to know because at the end of the day it’s the people in these areas who will use the cemetery.

“I don’t even know why they appointed NFP MP, Prem Singh as a trustee when he lives in Votualevu, a place, which doesn’t fall within our area and Votualevu has its own cemetery.

“There are people in Korovuto who can do his job better,” he added.

Mr Sharma said most people in the area don’t know how the committee functions and funds were used.

“I think Mr Singh being a politician, he should have known better,” he said.

Committee president, Kamlesh Kumar said he was not aware of the Opposition MP’s appointment adding it was a political issue, which he wished not to make a comment on.

“We only allow financial members of the committee to attend our annual general meetings, soon we will be having another meeting to appoint the new trustees and other key positions,” Mr Kumar said.

He added that the appointment of Mr Singh was made before he became the committee president.

When contacted yesterday, Mr Singh said he had been a trustee of the committee over the past six years.

“Yes I am a trustee, I am not sure about the issue of the AGM and I was not present at the time they appointed me as a trustee, the president at that time, Satish Narayan, has migrated to the USA,” Mr Kumar said.
