India’s 72nd Independence Day celebration in the country was given an apt and befitting venue – onboard the visiting Indian Navy Ship (INS) Sahyadri.

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama and his wife, Mary, joined officials from Government, Republic of Fiji Military Forces, members of the Indian community in Fiji and the diplomatic corps in an elaborate event.

The vessel, which sailed in on Monday to offer Fijians free medical services and tours is berthed at the Port of Suva.

Captain (Navy) Shantanu Jha said: “Seeing all you wonderful people here on our deck tonight has made us feel closer to home.”

The night was filled with entertainments and dance.

With 300 officers and sailors on board, the stealth multi-role frigate is here on a goodwill visit. The vessel departs today.
