Two people spent the night at Lautoka Hospital after they were involved in an accident along the Barara flats in Nadi before midday yesterday.

According to Police, the incident occurred around 10.50am when a minibus carrying 10 passengers veered off the road and then travelled down a slope before it fell to its side.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed that eight passengers were treated and sent home while two were admitted in hospital.

“The minivan driven by a 48-year-old man was travelling towards Lautoka when the incident happened,” she said.

“The minivan wanted to overtake another vehicle, but veered off the highway.”

It fell on its side after travelling down a slope and the passengers were forced to break the window to exit the vehicle.

Timaima Nalumi, 30, who lives across the road, was among the first responders after the incident.

She said they were drinking tea when they heard the sound of the vehicle falling on its side.

“When I rushed to the scene people broke the windows and were trying to come out of the vehicle,” Ms Nalumi said.

“I have not seen such an accident and it was a scary experience.”

Ms Naisoro said the driver was in Police custody and was yet to be questioned.
