‘Respect accident site’

Earlier this week a couple were on their way to Pacific Harbour to collect some household items. As they approached Nabou, there was a long traffic jam near the accident site where eight people died.

When they went close to one of the electric posts that had banners and flowers, they noticed and heard people laughing and giggling away. Some of them were even taking photos and selfies with big BULA smiles using the space for some photo opportunity.

The husband’s heart was heavy as he stood there looking at the ground with silence and the wave of emotions that struck him was out of his control not realising that tears were rolling down his face. He does not know them personally, but their tragic departure from life made him feel like they were part of him, his blood.

Even when he got back in the car, he didn’t realise that he was in tears until his wife stopped talking to him because she didn’t know what to say further.

He says: “Those of you who are planning to drop by the site, don’t use that as a time for photo opportunity, even if you do, at least show some decency, courtesy and expression of sadness as an indication of the circumstances that made you arrive there. It ain’t a trophy for you to go and take selfies with all those peace and thumbs up hand signs, NO!

“Those lives are sons, cousins, husband and father to a family – treat them with respect and the courtesy it deserves.

“I would also call upon the government of the day to erect a monument to remind drivers of the consequences of careless driving, and the people of the essence of life, instilling a sense of self-appreciation and appreciation for lives of those around us.”
