Right on, Maryanne

Comment quickly posted by that bright communication officer in the city Maryanne Lockington-Shirley last night on the crowning of Miss Hibiscus:

“Right … first they need to take Fiji Sun’s front page cover photo before she can make her speech.”

Setting the standards

FijiFirst Cabinet ministers left behind their Government cars and travelled to their interview at the party headquarters in Brown Street, Suva in private cars.

The interview panel, led by the party’s general secretary, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, conducted interviews on Thursday, Friday and yesterday.

One minister who was out of town, and touring another part of the country on official duties, paid his own airfares to come in for the interview before returning to continue his tour.

The ministers did not want to be seen breaching the rules. They pay their own way and travel in private vehicles when they are on party errands. But when they attend to their official responsibilities Government provides transport and associated costs. It’s all about ethics and the separating of politics from Government service. To those ministers, thank you for showing and leading the way.

Picking the best

We hear that the interview for applicants to be provisional candidates for FijiFirst has been thorough and comprehensive.

The panel, led by Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum in his capacity as general secretary, has lifted the standards to another level.

It is looking for the best line-up to represent the party in the 2018 general election. We will know the details very soon. Some current members of Parliament may not be on the list.
