Nadi-based Andrews Primary School plans to build an evacuation centre to accommodate 1000 people in a bid to provide shelter for Fijians during natural disasters.

This was confirmed by Mohammed Sattar, who has been the president of the institution for the past 18 years.

He said the school had been granted permission by the Ministry of Education to raise funds for the project to coincide with the school celebrating their centennial anniversary from November 15 to 17.

“The school has been 100 years old now and we will celebrate it in a big way with reunion of former staff and students from around the globe,” Mr Sattar said.

“This school has been used by the Government on numerous occasions as an evacuation centre during natural disasters. This is one of the projects we are coinciding with our centennial celebration.”

Mr Sattar said during times of disaster an estimated 600 people from the low-lying areas of Nawaka used the school premises to shelter for a few days.

They will be also requesting the Government for assistance in the building project.
