National Fire Authority (NFA) personnel have been working tirelessly to bring under control the Vunato Rubbish Dump fire in Lautoka.

A disappointed Lautoka City Council chief ex¬ecutive officer Jone Nakauvadra said two sections of the dump were burned, but they could not determine where it started.

“All we can confirm is that it started around 2am and we are using every available resources at our disposal to put it out,” Mr Nakauvadra said.

“We have reported the matter to Police and in the meantime, NFA personnel have been working determinedly to bring the situation under control.”

Sources living near the dump confirmed that firefighters were in the area and had at least two 1500-litre trucks manning the situation, with each truck estimated to have made at least five refills throughout the day in efforts to bring the situation under control.

Mr Nakauvadra said the council knew that fire was started by someone, because fires do not start by itself.

:Nor does it take someone all the way from Labasa to come and start a fires here in Lautoka,” he said.

“All I can say about their actions is that, it is disrespectful to members of nearby communities whose houses are affected by the smoke

“They are also disrespectful to efforts by authorities who want a clean and safe environment for our communities,” Mr Nakauvadra said.

He is not aware if there was any problems between the council and nearby communities.

This is not the first time for the Vunato Rubbish Dump to be set on fire, because  a similar situation occurred in early December last year.

Fiji Police spokeswoman Ana Naisoro said that they had received a report from the Lautoka City Council office on the matter and would be working with the NFA in investigating the cause of the fire.
