Nigerian queen contestant Torika Maduekwe sponsored by Apco Coatings Limited won the Best Sarong Award at the Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North.

Even though she has no serious aspiration to capture the Queen’s crown, the win on Monday night was a confidence booster to do her best.

Wearing a purple and yellow coloured three metres bula material, the 21-year-old looked stunning as she walked on stage during the Sarong judging night at Subrail Park in Labasa.

Being the tallest also among the 12 queen contestants, Miss Maduekwe was shocked when she  was announced as the winner in this category.

“With the help of my friends I prepared the sarong and it only took a few minutes to wear,” Miss Maduekwe said.

“My only focus was to make a clear and beautiful presentation of my outfit and hence was surprised to win.

“The sarong is elegant, sophiscated, comfortable for swimming and its cultural appropriation.

“Any culture can wear this sarong.

I wasn’t shy or afraid to walk on stage because my aim is to build on confidence during this weeklong festival.”

When questioned if she was eyeing the crown, the lass who shares maternal links to Wailevu Village in Macuata, replied no.

Describing herself as a simple and humble girl, Miss Maduekwe thanked her friends for helping her grab one award.

Her father is originally from Anambra State, Nigeria and her hobbies include watching movies, reading story books and taking a nap. Edited by Percy Kean
