Talking on the topic of climate change and its effect on the Northern Division saw the judges’ decision swing the way of Miss Northern Civil Service Meiema Maeli.

The 23-year-old was awarded the Best Research Topic during the Miss Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North at Subrail Park in Labasa on Sunday night.

Miss Maeli, the only Kioan queen contestant, said she didn’t know she would win because she wasn’t sure whether people would be interested to know about the most serious issue in the world which is climate change.

“It took me one month to prepare my topic and I made sure I gathered relevant information from the Ministry of Agriculture, Biosecurity and Ministry of Health,” Miss Maeli said.

“One of the effects of climate change is rise in sea level, which has forced people of Vunidogoloa Village in Cakaudrove province to relocate.

“There are other effects of climate change on natural resources including land and sea which our people have shared their experience of loss over the last five years.”

The teacher of Nabala Secondary School in Macuata province said she personally felt she had to take up the responsibility to advocate on climate change.

“The Government has implemented so many policies and carried out awareness educating people on simple things such as planting trees, avoid use of plastic bags and other things to save our environment,” she said.

“Unfortunately, many are not listening or trying to be a good citizen to save our planet as Fijians or as human race.

“I am grateful at least my time of preparation was awarded and hopeful that people had taken heed of my message.”

She is among the 12 queen contestants at the festival which will end this Saturday night.
