Farmer, Tevita Vakayadra’s plans to spend time with his children at the Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North in Labasa this weekend will not happen.

Mr Vakayadra, 36, a farmer who hails from Nabouwalu in Bua died in a road accident on Monday.

His death brings the road death toll now to 46, compared to 42 for the same period last year.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said the deceased who was the driver of the vehicle was accompanied by a 20-year-old passenger, Timoci Somumu, of Tacilevu Village.

Ms Naisoro said they were heading to Tukavesi Village in Cakaudrove when the deceased allegedly lost control of the vehicle.

“The passenger managed to jump out through the left passenger window before the vehicle tumbled twice and went over a cliff which was about 10-15 metres down.

“The deceased (driver) was stuck inside the vehicle and died instantly at the scene,” Ms Naisoro said.

The passenger received minor injuries, she said, while Police await a post mortem examination on the deceased.

His childhood friend, Camari Saucake, said Mr Vakayadra left Labasa for Tukavesi in Cakaudrove on Monday morning in a rental vehicle.

She said he was looking forward to meeting his children.

“He told me that he was going to pick his two children from Tukavesi so that they can enjoy the last week of the school holidays at the festival,” Ms Saucake said.

Shocked with the news of her best friend’s passing, Ms Saucake said that his death was untimely as he had big plans in life.

“I was shocked upon receiving a call later that day that Tevita had died in an accident.”

“He was a humble person, loving, always smiling, good hearted and worked hard as a farmer,” she said.
