The Fiji Sugar Corporation chief operating officer Navin Chandra commended the Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North contestants for their participation, weaving in the importance of youth involvement in communities. Mr Chandra was speaking to the contestants during their visit to the Labasa Mill yesterday.

“I am also a strong supporter of the pageant’s focus on youth development and youth’s participation in community development initiatives,” Mr Chandra told the 12 queen and four king contestants.

“Merging community building and youth development is a must.

“I am of the view that the youth must be fully engaged and be involved in change efforts at the community level if they are to function as effective members of society.

“Involvement of Youth, in community development can lead to skills enhancement, confidence building and ownership that can prepare them as they navigate their exciting lives towards adulthood.

“As parents and society at large, we have a duty to teach our children the importance of helping others.”

“We need to encourage our children to volunteer in worthy causes so that they can become active in their communities, if we do this, we will help reverse the moral decay that is staring to engulf our communities and help build safe, prosperous and sustainable communities.

“I therefore challenge all contestants to go out there and be agents of positive change in communities where they live.”
