The Vanuatu cricket team are on a mission to qualify for the Asian Cup competition on September 15-28 in United Arabs Emirates, says a senior official.

Speaking to SUNsports yesterday Vanuatu coach Shane Deitz said they are ready for their 2018 ICC World Twenty20 East Asia Pacific Sub Regional Qualifier opener against Fiji at 9.30am today at Albert Park in Suva.

“The boys have been training hard and we’re very excited about the tournament,” Deitz said.

“We will focus on one game at a time and play every game as a final. The main purpose is for us to try and qualify for the 2018 Asian competition.

“We will have to focus more on the ball that we will play and the results will take care of itself.”

Deitz added that they would be featuring one of their best players during the competition.

“We’ve Patrick Matautaava who has played cricket around the world. He is a world class player and we hope that he will produce the goods again for Vanuatu.

“It’s a great opportunity to play with other Pacific island nations as we will be able to give exposure to some of our players.

“This competition will build friendship among players as they look forward in meeting up and playing in upcoming tournaments.”
