Decline In Membership Due To Migration Says Vakadewavosa

The main reason for the decline in membership of the  Methodist Church in Fiji is migration.

This was stated by Methodist Church in Fiji and Rotuma president Reverend Epineri Vakadewavosa.

He said many of the church members were migrating.

“We looked at some positive reflection because many of our members are going overseas to New Zealand, Australia, United States of America and the United Kingdom,” Reverend Vakadewavosa said.

“The church there is growing and this is causing the declining of membership at home.”

He said they would gather the statistics and present it in the next Bose Ko Viti.

“We are very grateful with that picture in hand today,” Reverend Vakadewavosa said.

“We have our communication departments to get the statistics of Methodist living overseas so that we can have the total roll of those here and those overseas.

“We also have to respect that some of our members are going to other churches. The church overseas are really growing.”

According to the Government statistic in 2014 there were 300,000 Methodist members while the Methodist statistics revealed there were only 198,000.

This year, it had dropped to 194,000, even though the Bureau of Statistics still maintained it was more than 300,000.
