Fiji men’s volleyball captain Emosi Nawalu believes all their hard work and sacrifice have finally paid off at the 2018 Oceania Volleyball Championship in New Caledonia last weekend.

Beating New Zealand 3-1 for the first time and to claim the gold medal was an overwhelming experience for the side.

The Vunuku, Rewa native feels the players’ struggles building up to the competition finally paid off.

“We had to pay our bus fares to training and preparing for the tournament,”Nawalu said.

“A week before the tournament, one of our players’ father died so it just strengthened our bonding.”

“We had a few hiccups in the first set. The players disagreed on a few things but I told the boys that we have to work hard and focus on the game.

“We just played our own Fijian way and dethrone the Oceania champions,” he added.

The Rewa native captained the Fiji Blues side in 2016.

“I want to thank the Lord for the win and Fiji Volleyball and our families for their support.”
