Hindu devotees in Fiji are in preparation mode for the eight-day Shree Krishna Janmashtami celebration which starts  tomorrow.

The annual religious festival is to celebrate the birth of Krishna, the eighth avatar of Vishnu.

Laxmi Narayan Temple priest, Shastri Jayendra said the event would  start on August 27th  and ends on September 3rd.

“We will celebrate the birth of Lord Krishna. Janmashtami, is celebrated with great enthusiasm all over Fiji, in all temples around the country,” he said.

“It is believed that Lord Vishnu reincarnated in the form of Lord Krishna on the auspicious day of Janmashtami”.

Mr Jayendra said that Hindu devotees would attend prayers at their nearest temple during this occasion as a mark of respect for this particular event.

“They will bring sweets from home and make contributions for the successful celebration,” he said.

“This event brings togetherness among people. They will sing devotional hymns during this celebration.

“Devotees will also break their fast, by sharing food and sweets among themselves in the temple.”
