The Tacirua rugby team are new winners of the 2018 Ram Sami Nasinu Premier competition when they edged out Newtown 16-13 at St Marcellin ground in Vatuwaqa yesterday.

Tacirua coach Tevita Tikoisuva told SUNsports that spiritual preparation boosted their performance this year.

“That really lifted us compared to last year where we lost to Newtown in the semi-final,” he said.

“After our loss last year we saw that one of our weaknesses was our spiritual and mental preparation.

“We really learnt our lesson from last year and came with the aim to lift our performance.

“When we played the final today we stuck to our game plan and these young boys played their hearts out.”

Newtown led 10-3 at halftime but Tacirua regrouped in the second half to kick two penalties and a conversion of No 8 Paula Qarikau’s match winning try with 12 minutes remaining.

“We want to thank Nasinu Rugby and our families for their support and we look forward to the challenge which starts next week,” Tikoisuva added.
