The Minister for Fisheries Semi Koroilavesau has called for an immediate set up of a fishing association in Vatoa.

Mr Koroilavesau, who is on an official visit to the Lau Group, yesterday told fishermen on Vatoa, to set-up their association to receive

assistance from the Government.

“If this is set up, the assistance that will be given can be easily used by villagers on the island,” Mr Koroilavesau said.

“We are here regarding the protection of your fish areas. We have already been to the Malolo Islands, Yasawa Group and Mamanucas

doing new development on how to protect the qoliqoli.”

The minister and his delegation have been conducting awareness on the banned fish species as well during this trip.

The assistance to be given to villagers is Fishing Aggregated Devices (FAD).

This will be free of charge for the villagers.

“We have given FAD devices to Vanua Levu, Kadavu and Yasawa and we are planning to give it here as well,” Mr Koroilavesau said.

The FAD devices will attract fish colonies and will give an indication for the village fishermen on where to fish.

Hence, the need to prevent overfishing.

The ministry is also installing ice machines during their visit.

The recent installation was in Cicia.

The ice plants also depend on fresh water supply.

However, for Vatoa, which has no fresh water supply and depends on rainwater for nourishment have to wait for this assistance.

“The next Ministry of Fisheries team that will visit the Southern Lau Group will create an awareness workshop on how to use FAD

devices,” the minister said.
