State Objects Bail For Murder Accused

A State lawyer in the case against a suspected Levuka murderer objected to bail for the accused, Tevita Deve.

Deve, 34, appeared before the High Court in Suva on Monday represented by a private lawyer who sought more time to respond to the agreed facts proposed by the prosecution. State lawyer Taitusi Tuenuku said he had served the proposed agreed facts to the defence on July 26, 2018. But the defence said she could not respond to the State because she had other matters to attend to. Justice Thushara Rajasinghe expressed concern saying the Court gave mention dates for a reason.

Deve denies assaulting his 21-year-old wife and murdering her on March 4, 2018 by making her drink paraquat. The alleged incident took place at Naikorokoro Village in Levuka, Ovalau. Mr Tuenuku told Justice Rajasinghe that he would be objecting to Deve’s bail because of the seriousness of the charge and there was a possibility that Deve would interfere with State witnesses. The case has been adjourned to September 5, 2018 for bail hearing. Deve is currently remanded at the Suva Remand Centre.
