Suva rugby flanker Elia Canakaivata could be a new man in the Fiji Airways Fijian 7s squad in the 2018/2019 World Sevens Series.

The 22-year-old from Navunisole, Tailevu was the new player joining the sevens camp early this week and was rated by head coach Gareth Baber.

“Elia he’s in with us as well, he’s been with the Drua last year and I also watched him during the Natovi 7s last year in Korovou,” he said.

“His got talent, his young in terms of experience but he’s played with the Suva team in the Skipper Cup Premiership competition and he’s doing everything right to get himself a position to represent Fiji in 7s.”

Now that Eroni Sau has teamed-up his new Perpignan club in France, Baber believes the search party for wing position starts now.

“We have Alasio Naduva and I saw few boys in the under-20 team and the Drua side. I would like to see some other players coming through.

“We are blessed with the halfback position as we have Sremaia Tuwai, Waisea Nacuqu and Vatemo Ravouvou.”

Baber also made mentioned on Nikola Matawalu’s younger brother Peni Matawalu who currently plays for the Fiji Airways Fijian Drua.

“Peni is also a good halfback.”

The Fiji Airways 7s squad return to camp after four weeks. During the four weeks Baber will travel around three main Fiji Rugby Union high performance centres in Nadi, Lautoka and Suva to assess the players’ preparation level.

“After four weeks I will bring them back to camp and will do some training in the sand dunes, gym work and also see that everyone is medically fit as well.”
