The Fiji National University Students’ Association (FNUSA) strongly refutes all allegations made by FNU student Ilisapeci Marama Tunamena that has been highlighted in the media.

The FNUSA confirms that it met with the complainant, where all issues raised in the letter to the Registrar of the Fiji National University were discussed and clarification provided.

For transparency and accountability purposes, the FNUSA provides necessary explanations to allegations raised in the letter dated 12 March, 2018 as follows:

As per the FNUSA Finance Policy, if FNUSA wishes to spend money on any project, a proposal clearly explaining the purpose of the expenditure, together with how it aligns with the FNUSA strategic objective is presented to the FNUSA President and the President in consultation with the FNUSA Executive Committee and Council makes a decision.

  • FNUSA just like other University SA has a student association levy, FNUSA has a levy of $20 per annum which is used to fund student activities.
  • The 2017 financial statement for FNUSA is audited by an external auditor; Parkers Chartered Accountants (Fiji) PTE Limited and was completed on 15 March 2018. It was presented at the FNUSA AGM on 24 March 2018 and the meeting was attended by Ms Tunamena where clarifications were provided for all queries. The AGM passed all reports that were presented.
  • The vehicle JF667 is registered under Mr.Ketans’ father, which Mr.Ketan keeps for his personal use. This vehicle does not belong to the FNUSA.
  • The FNUSA owns one vehicle (registration “FNUSA”). This is a pre-used vehicle purchased earlier this year to assist with the daily office operations, events and community out-reach programs conducted by the Association as the campuses are widely dispersed across the country and there were transportation challenges. Purchase of the vehicle was done upon approval by FNUSA Council.
  • Mr. Ketan Lal was elected as the President of the FNUSA Derrick Campus in 2016, following FNU wide student elections. The student elections were supervised by the Fijian Elections Office (FEO). Mr. Lal was then elected as the President of the FNUSA by Presidents from 10 campuses (who were elected as part of the FNU wide elections) as per the FNUSA constitution in the first committee meeting.
  • Mr. Ketan Lal is a fourth year student pursuing Bachelor in Civil Engineering (Hons) at the College of Engineering, Science and Technology.
  • No FNUSA committee member is paid a salary. As per the FNUSA Constitution elected members only receive monthly honorarium which is payable at the end of each year upon passing of all reports at the AGM.
  • The building(FNUSA Headquarters), together with the fittings and furniture which houses FNUSA is owned by the Fiji National University. The University has provided these facilities to the Association across major campuses for members to conduct their daily operations and FIJI NATIONAL UNIVERSITY STUDENTS’ ASSOCIATION “Uniting the Students’ Voice”
