The dry spell is upon us and the onus is on each of us to do our part to save water.

Parts of Fiji are already experiencing a severe dry spell.

Water has already been carted to people in the Western and Northern Divisions and parts of the maritime areas. What can you do to make a difference? It is the little things that count. Turning off the taps when brushing, filling water in buckets for showers and not washing your car regularly is a good start.

The last thing we want is for people to start watering their gardens with tap water on one side of the island while the other side does not have drinking water. Instead of defrosting your meat under running water, put it in the refrigerator to defrost after taking it out of deep freeze. If we do not do our part right now, all Fijians will suffer.

With less rains, our reservoir will also suffer, which in turn will lead to power cuts or heavy reliance on diesel generators to supply electricity to everyone.

In days to come, the dry spell too will be politicised.

There will be people out there, who will blame the FijiFirst Government if water is not carted to them in time, they will blame the Water Authority of Fiji for their woes, but before we start the blame game, we need to do our part.

It is our responsibility to be prudent about how we use water. Please check your taps for leaks and fix them. You will not only be saving money, but you will also be helping in making a difference.

Where possible, Fijians need to get into the habit of rainwater harvesting.

For every Fijian family to survive for two days in the event of a water cut, we need to have 200 litres of water stored. This is where we need to focus our efforts on. We need to be wise.

Your action today will determine whether tomorrow all Fijians will have piped water. Do your bit.
