Energy Fiji Limited estimates that 65 per cent to 75 per cent of electricity on Viti Levu is being generated through diesel generators.

EFL says this is because it has not received any rain at the Monasavu dam site in the past six weeks.

EFL chief executive officer Hasmukh Patel said they were only getting about 25 per cent of electricity requirements for Viti Levu from the Monasavu Hydro scheme.

“Our main aim is to conserve water at Monasavu dam so that we can make sure that the power station can run on a daily basis,” Mr Patel said.

“The report I have received from the Meteorology Department basically says the remaining few months this year we should expect below average rainfall.

“Which means we must take precautions and ensure that we use the amount of water we have at the Monasavu dam very cautiously and carefully.

“If we use up that water within one month then what will you do if we don’t get rain, so the idea is that whatever volume of water we have right now we use it in such a manner that it can last for three or four months at least.”

“Remember the dam is a cone-shaped dam and not a rectangular shape dam, so as you continue to use the dam the dam level is going to come down much faster,” he said.

It’s not the level, but how much the volume of exactly how much water is there.

And if we don’t have inflows then we know exactly how many days or weeks that water will last, but that depends on how much you draw from there.

“So if you run it at full beam then obviously the water will go out very fast so we have to be very cautious.”
