Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) members will assemble for a Special General Meeting today to discuss issues relating to elections campaigning.

In light of the analysis published in the Fiji Sun on August 30, 2018 titled “No Restriction On Campaign Before Writ Of Elections,” Opposition Leader Ro Teimumu Kepa said the issue would be discussed in today’s meeting.

“We were of the understanding that we can only campaign after the Writ of Election is issued, until we read about it in the Fiji Sun, in particular since it was lifted from some of our members’ postings that we are only doing awareness, which we had to bring up until the article came out in the papers,” she said.

“We have not really discussed it so maybe that might be something that will come up particularly with many of our provisional candidates who are first-timers.”

She said party members could now go out and campaign.

The Fiji Sun analysis confirmed from the Supervisor of Elections Mohammed Saneem, that politicians could campaign before the Writ is issued as there were no restrictions in the electoral law.
