The Ministry of Education is making plans to move toward electronic libraries.

Permanent Secretary for Education, Heritage and Arts Alison Burchell says the library is a world of knowledge through that knowledge we can build bridges.

Ms Burchell made the comments as she launched National Library Week celebrations on Friday night in Suva.

The theme for National Library Week this year is “Libraries Lead: building bridges, making a difference in the Community”.

“The ministry is looking at various things in terms of moving towards eBooks and trying them out through the library services,” Ms Burchell said.

“The change is happening and it will take some time to embed in the system and into our society.

“Increasingly we are looking at technology and, in that context, how we use eBooks. It is not just about literacy in the normal sense, but is also about increasingly technological literacy.”

Ms Burchell reminded those present to use the library whenever they could.

“Libraries in Fiji are probably one of the best kept secrets and one the challenges is to ensure that it is no longer kept a secret,” she said.

“When the public use the library it will improve the literacy and numeracy rate.”

Ms Burchell said reading books could also teach innovative knowledge.

“We need to make sure that the communities are encouraged to use the library because they are public property,” she said.

“Reading aloud is something we need to do more often because it is only through reading aloud we can hear the pronunciation.”

Librarians in the Central Division were part of the celebration and dressed up as book characters.
