Suicide Case Of Year 11 Student Under Probe

Police are investigating why a Year 11 student at a boarding school in Levuka, Ovalau, committed suicide.

This was confirmed by Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro who said yesterday that the student was found dead in his dormitory on August 28. He was taken to the Levuka Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the student had complained of a severe headache to fellow students before his death. Investigations are continuing.

Lifeline Fiji officer Biutiganedra Baleiokinawa said they were raising awareness through Facebook posts and were trying to reach out to communities to prevent suicides.

“The number of suicide cases has increased over the past years,” she said.

“Suicide comes into people’s mind when there are too many things going on like emotional pain and requires counselling.

“We try to stabilise the person when they call us for help and ask the person’s address and we also track calls to send police officers as soon as possible to prevent suicides”.

The suicide statistics from January to July 2018 are:

– Two under 16 years old committed suicide; 13 attempted suicide.

– 12 aged between 17 and 25 years committed suicide; 20 attempted suicide.

– 44 aged 26 years and above committed suicide; 33 attempted suicide.

Lifeline Fiji toll-free number is 132454, based at 256, Waimanu Rd, Suva.
