Fifteen-year-old Taveuni student Clarence Hussain could not hold back his tears when his name was announced as a member of the Vodafone Fijian Under-16 football team to the OFC Oceania playoffs.

Speaking to SUNsports, Hussain said he was emotional because he thought back to when it all first started,

“I was lucky to be chosen to represent my country,” he said.

Hussain said early this year while in class he received a phone call informing him that he had been chosen for the national U16 squad.

“I still have that feeling when first told of the news and it is something I will never forget. There were hardships faced along the way but it part of life and we cannot avoid it.”

Hussain said he was drawn to the sport by his elder brother and father.

“My dad was a football player and he also coached the Taveuni team. With him and my elder brother, I developed my interest in the sport,” he said.

Hussain first represented his school right from primary school and he got more exposure while moving up to secondary school.

However, his major breakthrough came last year when he represented Labasa College in the Under-19 competition.

“The team managed to qualify for the finals and that was the turning point in my career as I wanted to go a step further in playing for my country.”

Hussain said everyone in Taveuni is really proud of him as nothing like this has ever happened before.

The U16 OFC playoffs will be held in Honiara, Solomon Islands from September 9-22.
