There is joy in silence at sea which nothing can replace.

For Napolioni Tavuta of Yasawa Islands, being out at sea is always the best time of his life.

The 69-year-old passionate islander said that he had always been drawn to the sea right from his childhood.

“It’s the one thing that I can never get over with – I just love the sea for its colour, beauty and silence,” Mr Tavuta said.

It was his exposure to the sea world during his childhood that was elemental in shaping his career path. He currently works on board Ulu-I-Vatusawalo which departs with passengers and cargo to the Yasawa group of islands every week on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

Recalling the moments out at sea seemed to fill him with a sense of reflection and hope as well.

“I’m able to reflect on my life when I am out in the open sea. It’s so peaceful out there,” he said.

Mr Tavuta prefers the island life to the busy city life.

“It’s so peaceful back in the village and I like it that way. I would not be able to live in such a noisy place,” he said.

His career started in 1968 when he started working on a Government vessel. He retired from the job in 2009 prior to joining the new life at sea. It was also about the fun times that one shares out in the open space as well.

“Being out in the open with friends is always a happy time for me,” he said.

Another concepts highlighted by the native was on the need to practice sustainable development.

“We use natural products back in the village and try to avoid the mis-use of natural resources. We get comfort from our mother earth,” he said.

Mr Tavuta also said that it gets quite dangerous sometime in the open sea. “Rough weather makes it quite difficult for us sometimes,” he said.

For now, he will continue with what he does best.
