Human Rights Lawyer, Sabrina Iqbal Khan spent time yesterday with disadvantaged children of Lautoka’s Sunshine School.

She spoke to them about their rights and using the Constitution as a guideline to drawing up a classroom constitution.

The children were made to participate in discussions about being good citizens and took on homework, a task requiring them to implement a classroom constitution using the Fijian Constitution as a guide to uphold respect and dignity towards others.

“It was a pleasure speaking with the children,” Ms Khan said.

“These are leaders of tomorrow and it is incumbent that we instil the correct principles in them today.”

“Principles that are Godly, harmonious and aware of a changing world. They can overcome challenges with a positive foundation.

“The Fijian Constitution has indeed come a long, positive way to set a good backbone for these future leaders.”

The school invited Ms Khan to be chief guest for their Constitution Day Celebration.

She also shared that special education was an area with much-needed reform.

“It is great to enter the workforce with a background in education and/or training,” Ms Khan said.

“However, many of these special needs students don’t have that opportunity due to limited, little or next to no learning skills where literacy and numeracy are concerned, yet they may excel in trade work or basic administrative duties.

“I would like to see a job placement scheme or initiative in place to help facilitate this transition for those who identify as having come from a disadvantaged background.”
