Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama’s presidency of COP23 is nearing an end, but he is keeping up the climate change fight.

Mr Bainimarama spoke of this yesterday following his return from Bangkok, Thailand and the latest round of global climate change negotiations as COP23 President.

Mr Bainimarama said he will hand over his presidency at COP24 in December.

“That is why I am fighting so fiercely here at home and on the world stage to do everything in my power to prepare our nation and our people for the storms on the horizon, storms the experts tell us will only become stronger in the years ahead,” he said.

“That is also why I took on the role of Presidency of COP23.  There will be a grand coalition I’ve sought to forge from Day One of my presidency to life, uniting national governments, states, regions, cities, businesses and ordinary citizens to put the entire planet on course to stave off the worst climate impacts.

“From there, I will carry our message for action and greater, more ambitious commitment to New York for the UN General Assembly, and continue to press our case all the way up to handover of the Presidency at COP24,” he said.

COP23 is the informal name for the 23rd Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

The UNFCCC was adopted in 1992 at the Rio Earth Summit, which marked the beginning of the international community’s first concerted effort to confront the problem of climate change.

Known also as the Rio Convention, the UNFCCC established a framework for action to stabilise concentrations of greenhouse gases in the earth’s atmosphere.

Fiji presided over COP23 which took place in Bonn, Germany, from November 6 to 17, 2017.

Mr Bainimarama said being the COP23 President was not easy, but he was glad to share with the world what small Pacific Island countries like Fiji are experiencing from climate change. COP24 will take place from December 3 to 14 in Katowice, Poland, with Poland holding the presidency of the Climate Convention for the third time. Edited by Jonathan Bryce
