Over the past 30 days 84 earthquakes occurred in the area around Fiji.

However, Fijians do not need to worry or panic.

This is the view of University of the South Pacific’s senior lecturer in the School of Geography, Earth Science and Environment, Holger Sommer.

“There were seven earthquakes this morning (yesterday) in the Levuka area ranging in magnitude between 4.3 and up to 7.8, but all of them occurred in a depth ranging between 594km to 662km,” he said.

“Earthquakes occurring at such a depth will not cause any threat to the country.”

Mr Sommer explained that there was no cause for alarm.

“No actually there is nothing to worry about it,” he said.

“Humans have to understand that earthquakes as well as volcanic eruptions are a result of plate tectonic processes and that makes Earth so unique compared to all the other planets in our universe.

“Without plate tectonics no life would be possible on Earth because the whole planet would be covered with a 5km thick ice sheet and temperature on the surface would be up to maybe -70°C.

“This situation occurred last time 600 million years ago, which we are calling Snow Ball Earth.”

When asked whether climate change could be a reason behind frequent earthquakes, he said: “If we are talking about climate change, we have to distinguish between human made climate change and the natural climate change.

“So, it is definitely not linked to the human climate change, but it is to 100 per cent linked to the natural climate change.

“But as I mentioned above, without the natural climate change life is not possible.”

Mr Sommer has also provided a link for readers who may want to understand earthquakes further.
