Assistant Minister for Local Government, Housing and Enviroment Lorna Eden resigned from all her ministerial portfolios yesterday.

Mrs Eden and her husband, Tim, had been issued with a prohibition notice to stop work on their island, which is at least 10 to 15 minutes ride from Savusavu Town.

It is understood that the company under which Bakabaka Island  is managed, Mainland Resorts Limited, was accused of clearing mangroves without first obtaining an environmental impact assessment report.

A statement from the Office of the Prime Minister said: “Given the current investigation into Mainland Resorts Limited, the Prime Minister has accepted the resignation of Lorna Eden as Assistant Minister effective as of September 7th, 2018.

“Ms Eden has resigned as Assistant Minister from all her portfolios. Lorna Eden will continue to serve as a Member of Parliament,” the statement said.

Minister of Environment and Waterways Mahendra Reddy said he would not comment on her resignation because he has only worked with her for a month.

“The portfolio for Environment was given to me last month,” he said.

Minister of Local Government, Urban Development, and Housing Praveen Bala, who held the position as Minister for Environment portfolio and had worked with Mrs Eden for the past three years said he would not comment on the issue.

The Edens were alleged to have breached the environment law when they cleared mangroves on Bakabaka Island in Savusavu.
