Fijians have been encouraged to cherish and celebrate the Constitution.

President Major General (Ret’d) Jioji Konrote gave the motivation durng  his speech marking Constitution Day.

It was a memorable event for thousands, who turned out for the Constitution Day celebrations at Subrail Park in Labasa.

They took advantage of the glorious weather to watch the entertainment planned for the day.

They painted the Babasiga Town in a sea of colours as the young and old marched through the town to the park.

President Konrote said the Fijian Constitution was the guiding light that drove all of Government’s actions and deeds.

“I realise that when you are thinking of a document, a celebration may not be appropriate according to your natural instinct; without considering its proper context, you may find it hard to perceive and regard the Constitution as important or exciting,” he said.

“In fact, all too often, it is something that we take for granted.

“But, as patriotic Fijians and good citizens we should refer to this document as a good thing.

“It is the sign of a strong Constitution that we should accept and be comfortable with, but often we tend to forget that it is even there.

“That is why we have Constitution Day in the first place, to take a moment to reflect on the immense intent and value of our Constitution.”

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama, Government ministers, some Opposition parliamentarians and heads of mission were present in the celebration.

One stand was filled to capacity with Northern Division students waving miniature Fijian flags providing the patriotism backdrop and spirit of the Constitution Day.

Meanwhile, President Konrote conveyed his gratitude for being reappointed as the Head of State.

“My fellow Fijians, I would like to voice my sincere appreciation for my reappointment as President, which took place just last week,” he said.

“I feel truly humbled to be blessed with this honour, and I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank the Honourable Prime Minister and his Government for their faith in me.”
