A year after writing to relevant authorities of their water issue, residents of Nagigi Settlement now have something more sustainable.

Twelve water tanks were delivered to the community and accompanied by Assistant Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Vijay Nath.

In total, 50 water tanks have been distributed to the settlement as part of the Rain Water Harvesting (RWH) scheme.

“The assistance was made possible through the Government’s RWH scheme which is part of a short term plan in addressing water problems in non-metered areas and with a total of $48,950 investment,” Mr Nath said.

“Water is a necessity of life and in recognition of this, your Government has made an ambitious commitment in its National Development Plan to ensure that all Fijians have access to safe and clean drinking water by 2031.

“I thank you all for buying your own gutters and constructing your water tank bases,” he said to the people.

“This is approximately equivalent to 30 percent of the total cost.”

Bimlesh Chand, who is the settlement’s Water Project treasurer, said: “We wrote letters to the respective ministers and WAF and finally these families received assistance.

“This 5000-litre tank will help save water also especially as we into dry season now.”
