Natua community in Seaqaqa has been declared a Zero Tolerance Violence Free Community.

In launching an ceremony to mark the declaration Minister for Women, Children, and Poverty Alleviation Mereseini Vuniwaqa said it was encouraging to see communities implementing the programme.

“We need to be aware of the marital vows and no matter what religion we belong, the love and respect for one another exists and its the key,” Ms Vuniwaqa said.

“Government has done a lot in terms of eradicating violence against women and children within homes,” she added.

“Government cannot achieve a violence-free community without the commitment of the community themselves.

“We need to be aware of the marital vows and no matter what religion we belong, the love and respect for one another exists and its the key.”

Meanwhile, Ms Vuniwaqa also officiated the opening of the Natua Women’s Club centre extension and dining room.

The centre, funded by the ministry, was built to empower women in the hope of helping them in income generating projects.

“The economy empowerment of women is the hallmark of the work of the ministry that we serve.

“I would like to thank the men for supporting Natua Women’s Club,” she said.

Natua Women’s Club President Nirma Kumari said: “Natua community has been very fortunate to have been chosen for the training carried out.

“This is the only Indo-Fijian registered club in Seaqaqa district and we have been active since 1991.

“We have been working with great interest in partnership with Government like ministers to provide greater services to the rural women.”
