Jockey Mohammed Ifran celebrated after his horse won the 1-mile horse race in Namosau, Ba yesterday.

The 27-year-old Sigatoka said he first started riding a horse when he was 10 years of age.

“I have not known anything else apart from my horse since then,” he said.

Ifran said that he had always wanted to become a jockey since childhood. He said despite the many challenges he had faced like injuries he has managed to overcome them.

“Some people discouraged me but that did not stop me from pursuing my interests,” he said.

When Ifran was 20, he bought a horse and it cost him $2500.

The winning horse Rocky is more than just a horse to him.

“I used to see everyone racing but I never had a horse. I treat him like my pet and I wouldn’t be able to imagine life without him.”

Ifran said times became tougher for him when he encountered injuries.

But the offset would just be as short as the injury and his passion for the sport would drive him forward.

“God blessed me with this gift and I’m just making use of it.”

He said that the lack of exposure to the sport was quite a drawback in Fiji.

“But there is a different joy altogether in horse racing,” he said.

Ifran is currently training his younger brother in the sport as well.

He said many people were afraid of riding horses due to the fear of falling and getting injured but there was a secret to it.

“Treat your horse nicely and he will love you back,” he said.

His message is for people to let go off their fear and just do what they want to do for once in life.
