Seini Vukivuki along with her eight Vodafone Sugar Festival fellow contestants have developed an interest for mushroom breeding and how it can be done locally.

This is after they visited the China – Fiji JUNCAO Technology Demonstration Centre in Legalega, Nadi yesterday.

Sponsored by Lautoka Market Vendors Association Ms Vukivuki said they are very grateful to go through the commodities at JUNCAO and the research station.

“It has enlightened our minds on this project, in particular – the growth of mushroom for various reasons,” she said.

“For some of us this was our first visit to this centre and it has been a new learning experience.”

The contestants were briefed on the breeding of JUNCAO grass and mushrooms, adaptability research on the technology, demonstration and production, technical service and extension as well as services provided at the centre.

Director Zhansen Lin thanked the contestants for their enthusiasm in trying to know more about the JUNCAO technology demonstration centre.

“This project promotes the development of JUNCAO technology in Fiji through co-operation in scientific research, technical training, demonstration and extension,” he said.

“It opens up a new way for developing sustainable agriculture in island countries.

“This visit will be helpful for the contestants on whatever research topic they choose to speak on.”

Meanwhile, all contestants were later hosted to afternoon tea at the Amalgamated Pest Control/flick anticimex office in Lautoka.
