Yaqona versus politics

Tomasi Vakatora, who appears to be steadily building support for Unity Fiji after his defection from SODELPA, knows how his former party operates.

According to him, a SODELPA meeting in Nasinu on Monday night was stopped prematurely after yaqona (kava) ran out.

Mr Vakatora said in a social media post: “They were told that the meeting could not continue because the yaqona they had brought as their sevusevu was insufficient and had been fully consumed.”

“Probably they spoke too long on issues that were really not relevant like urging people not to vote for so called small parties.” Unity Fiji is one of those small parties.

“They were not inspiring and in the end the people present felt their consumption of yaqona was more important.”

Digging deeper into pockets

With the price of yaqona now going over $100 a kilo, provisional candidates for the 2018 General Election are feeling the pinch.

They have had to dig deeper into their pockets to buy yaqona for their campaign meetings. That’s how they can get people to come and listen. It also shows that some people love their yaqona more than the political talk.

In the Navy

Join the navy and see the world, goes the saying. Seem to be increasingly true for some of our sailors and those with navy origins if reports in recent days in our pages are anything to go by.

RFNS Kikau and her crew are busy taking part in international naval exercises off northern Australia. Young officers are off for a four-year course in China. And RFMF commander Rear Admiral Viliame Naupoto left the country last Saturday to attend the Asia-Pacific Chiefs of Defence Conference in Hawaii.
