There is an 80 per cent drop in high risk cases of foot problems and those with kidney functions reduced from 40 per cent to zero this year.

This has been attributed to the formation of the Diabetes Peer Support group project in 2014.

Assistant Minister for Health and Medical Services Alex O’Connor said the programme was introduced after there was an alarming rise of lower limb amputation in Fiji.

“The peer groups were established in communities with high prevalent of diabetics living with complications. They were identified from primary care nurses in subdivisions to address,” Mr O’Connor said.

“The project has evolved from what initially targeted peers living with diabetes to now reaching family members and their communities at large.”

Mr O’Connor said worldwide experiences with Diabetes Community Peer Groups have shown to be an effective and successful tool in managing diabetes and its complications.

“The programme provided an opportunity for people living with diabetes to share their inspiration stories and activities that enabled them to take control of their diabetes and health in general,” Mr O’Connor said.

“Ministry of Health and Medical Services has noticed the achievement of the programme and has incorporated the programme in the divisional business plan.

“Every effort we make must be made to encourage Fijians to move towards wellness.”
