As a build to the BSP 2018 Fiji Human Resources Institute (FHRI) annual convention a CEOs (chief executive officers) Breakfast Briefing was organised at Suva’s Grand Pacific Hotel yesterday.

The idea was to engage CEOs. The guest speaker, FMF Foods chief executive Ram Bajekal presented on Using Strategic HRM (Human Resource Management) to Unleash the Human Resource potential”.

The gist of his presentation was human resource functions playing a more strategic role as opposed to the operational role that it can sometime be bogged down with.

In his presentation, he highlighted that many businesses fail to harvest their full potential because the organisation Culture they nurture is not in sync with what their business demands.

He also noted that people are our most valuable assets!”

Mr Bajekal posed the question When does HRM become a Strategic Business Driver?

“Strategy is the path that an Organisation needs to follow to achieve success.

“HRM ensures that people responsible for steering the Organisation on this path are: – able to steer; and – always want to do so.

“Therefore it is HR’s primary role: to ensure that these people: – are the right ones and adequate (talent pool) Equipped with appropriate roadmap and tools (Plan, Knowledge, Skills, Attitude);are provided with the appropriate environment (organisation culture)

“Are given the required fuel (motivation incl $$); – log the milestones (measurements) to check whether they are on track.

“All activities that plan and design how to ensure the above, are strategic (or, strategic HRM).” Over 30 participants attended and a similar exercise will be held at the  Fiji Orchid in Saweni, Lautoka, on September 26. The annual convention is scheduled for October 19-20 at the Sheraton Fiji,  Denarau, Nadi.
