In a solemn ceremony the Mayor of Mackay Greg Williams welcomed the Fiji Airways Fijian Drua side yesterday.

And he also wished them well in today’s Australia’s National Rugby Championship clash against Queensland Country at the BB Print Stadium MacKay.

Mayor Williams said the region was excited to be hosting again a top-flight rugby union game featuring two unbeaten teams in the NRC.

“Last year the stadium hosted an international rugby sevens series featuring Australia and Japan and it is fantastic that we again have secured a prestigious rugby union spectacle for our region,’’ he said.

“The NRC match between Queensland Country and the Fijian Drua will be streamed live by Fox Sports, ensuring our region will receive wonderful exposure.

“The council helped secure this NRC match with funding support from its Invest Mackay Events Attraction programme.”

He presented gift baskets to Drua’s representatives of Albert Tuisue, Frank Lomani and head coach Senirusi Seruvakula.

Tuisue was later interviewed by the local media about today’s game.

QRU’s general manager of professional rugby Sam Cordingley said: “Part of our NRC strategy is taking games to regional areas and clubs in an effort to engage with the grassroots rugby community.”

The match kicks-off at 3pm(Fiji time) and is shown live on Sky Pacific.
