A group of six fishers from Ra are in Kadavu as part of an exchange programme of fishing knowledge.

Kadavu has eight Fish Aggregate Devices (FAD), while Ra has 10 new FAD deployed in 2017 along the Rakiraki coast and the Dawasamu coast.

The programme is spearheaded by Conservation International (CI), under the Coral Triangle Initiative sponsored by the Asian Development Bank; in collaboration with the local NGO, ze Areas (FLMMA), cChange, and Provincial Offices (Ra and Kadavu) as well as the Ministry of Fisheries in both provinces.

The CI Ra province marine co-ordinator and FAD project officer Apisai Bogiva said the idea of an exchange programme came about after the project found that the data of fish caught at the Kadavu FADs were higher than those caught at the Ra FADs.

The exchange is a chance for the fishers to learn from each other, exchange fishing techniques or methods and share challenges and the best solutions to improving their catch with minimum effort.

The programme is being conducted at Lomaji Village in Nabukelevu and was opened by Tui Nabukelevu Ratu Apakuki Nanovo on Wednesday at the village hall.

Ra fisher Lisala Waqalala said from the programme they hoped to learn what Kadavu fishers were doing different that resulted in higher catch data from the FADs.

It included the design of FAD, the types of fishing gear used, baits and season of fishing.

The 54-year-old fisher said this experience would see him expand his knowledge on fishing methods and share this knowledge back in his village.

Next week a group of fishers from Kadavu will visit Ra to observe first-hand the conditions of the FAD and provide advice to the Ra fishers.

They will also provide an insight to the running of successful associations and businesses based around FAD fishing.
