For the first time a Cabinet minister attended Fiji Day celebration at Lagalaga Sanatan Primary School yesterday.

The school built in 1969 is located 60 kilometres from Labasa Town.

The chief guest, Attorney-General and Minister for Education Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, urged students, teachers and parents that whenever they saw a Fijian flag raised for the national anthem, they should immediately stand up and show respect.

“Whether you are watching a rugby match or among the crowd at Inter-District Championship, if you hear the national anthem, you stands up and show respect because in this way you will be sending a strong message to the young generation and to everyone,” Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said.

“If everyone works together and stand together then the country will be great.

“Do the simple things like keeping your environment and country clean.

“If somehow some people are trying to undermine the country for personal or political or commercial reasons or whatever the case maybe  you must think long term.

“All of us must remain loyal to their country. Loyalty means you put your country first. When you put your country first you ensure that your country is strong.

“We have a very young population and education has been made free.

“We have 50 per cent of our population below the age of 27 and 70 per cent below the age of 40.

“We need to ensure this young population have a better future.

“We cannot afford to have any child missing out from school because parents cannot afford fees.

“We have made education free for high school level and if anyone wants to study at tertiary or technical college we pay for it.

“This has been done to ensure that young men and women can contribute to the country and provide human capital and resources and also build a prosperous life for themselves.”
