The Fijian Elections Office yesterday did not accept SODELPA’s candidates’ nomination list after it rejected a party cheque.

Under the law it should be a bank cheque or cash.

Supervisor of Elections Mohammed Saneem confirmed that SODELPA did not comply with the requirements, so its nomination application was rejected.

Party general secretary Adi Litia Qionibaravi, who led the SODELPA delegation and made the submissions, declined to comment when approached.

Mr Saneem said the requirement was that any political party or independent candidate who would submit the nominations with FEO must pay a $1000 in legal tender or banker’s cheque per candidate.

“SODELPA did not produce a banker’s cheque together with their nomination and as such they have taken it back. They have not been nominated.”

Mr Saneem said the party submitted a party cheque instead of a banker’s cheque.

The party cheque takes at least seven days to be processed whereas the banker’s cheque is drawn immediately.

He added that the party should either produce the banker’s cheque or legal tender or cash to the FEO either today or thereafter and FEO would then process the nominations.

When questioned on whether there were workshops or awareness meeting held in regards to the submission of candidate nomination list, Mr Saneem said there were meetings and Ms Qionibaravi had always been the one attending all the workshops and meetings.

Meanwhile, only six days are left for the political parties to submit their completed nomination forms to the FEO.

“The FEO will not accept any candidate nomination form after 12pm as per the writ on October 15, 2018,” Mr Saneem said.

FijiFirst is the only party that has submitted its nomination list.
