The Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay recently celebrated the heritage of Fiji across two evenings with a unique ‘Underground Gourmet’ experience.

The “Underground Gourmet” event was held in seven Marriott International resorts across the South Pacific, including Fiji, Samoa, New Caledonia and Port Douglas in Australia.

The event gave guests from all over the world an opportunity to explore local culture, habits, rituals and traditions, and taste delicious food cooked using traditional earth ovens.

The name of the cultural event highlighted an underground cooking method as an important island tradition, hoping to use food as a way to get to know a culture first-hand.

Fiji Marriott’s guests submerged into Fijian traditions and gastronomy with various activities and entertainment that was organised at the resort as part of the event.

The event from the Shell Market in Lobby area, where local handicraft makers from Nakorokula village were invited to present their work.

Guests were happy to buy local souvenirs and pieces of art to support local communities.

Local Fijian artist Abraham Lagi also presented his artworks.

There were a number of works of art by Mr Abraham on display and for sale, and the artist was on hand to speak about Fijian contemporary art and its deep connection with Fijian history and culture.

The traditional voyaging canoe of Fiji, a big Drua, was placed in the lobby to demonstrate mastery in sailing and ship design as an essential part of local culture.

Kids and adults took part in various workshops including weaving, where they learned how to make baskets, bracelets, tropical hats and tiaras from palm leaves.

Then guests progressed onto the next location – Vonu Beach – to enjoy an evening of great Fijian food cooked using an earth oven, as they experienced tastes and ambiance at beautiful waterfront location.
