The Rice Fiji Limited, Ministry of Agriculture and Ministry of Public Enterprise have entered into joint venture agreements with two rice farming groups from Vanua Levu.

The joint venures is between Naividamu rice farmers and farmers from Laqere in Tabia, said the chairman of Fiji Rice Limited Raj Sharma.

Both groups gave 50 acres of land to Fiji Rice to develop, cultivate and harvest rice.

At this stage, Fiji Rice will pay farmers price ranging from $700 to $800 per tonne less the expense added Mr Sharma.

Both groups collectively in one season expected $40,000 each in six months, almost $80,000 for both collectively.

Government allocated for this sort of pilot project a budget of $100,000.

Minister for Agriculture Inia Seruiratu emphasised the importance of the rice industry and said this is one of the ways to reduce the import bill from the current $50 million, the money can be circulated to the local community by planting rice.

Mr Seruiratu said those groups should maintain bank accounts for proceeds that they will receive.

He also highlighted farmers from these areas should look at crop rotation on their lands during the off season of rice planting so that it will give them further income like planting beans, cabbages etc.

Both the presidents for the farmer groups were excited about the joint venture and thanked Government and Fiji Rice for initiating such an initiative.

Ashrit Pratap, general manager of Fiji Rice Limited said that there are other groups that have shown interest to have similar sort of joint ventures which company will take on board progressively.
