The close-knit community of Barara in Nadi is expected to get its drainage and waterways problems sorted out  in the coming months, says Minister for Waterways and Environment, Mahendra Reddy.

Mr Reddy said it was an ongoing problem during the heavy downpour when rain from the mountains would gush into their  homes.

“I have noted the issues that have been raised today and especially the issue of flooding around the area,” Mr Reddy said.

“The Government will look into these and hopefully we will begin some capital works in seven to eight weeks time.”

“The issue of flooding downstream as a result of outpouring of water in the river and we have examined these.

The Government is addressing the issue of flooding in these entire flood areas.”

Fiji Day celebration

Mr Reddy’s visit came as Barara Settlement celebrated Fiji Day.

The settlement is in Sabeto, Nadi.

“l thank the community for thinking big like no other community in Fiji in organising a Fiji Day such as this,” Mr Reddy said.

“Today is the day of joy, a day that every Fijian should be proud of, a day of reflection.

“We have also been through dark times but as a nation we prevail.

“All that we’ve been through it never ruined our spirit.

“The two natural disasters experienced by the country,

“TC Winston with flooding this year had affected our plans for the development of Fiji but it never tampered our spirit.”
