The Vuata Naresia-coached Nadi Bay Sharks are ready to face Coastal Herons in the opening round of the Jack’s Nadi Rugby Union franchise competition at Prince Charles Park, Nadi tomorrow.

The side is made up of players from the village clubs Western Marine (Narewa), Gaunavou (Namotomoto), Navoci and Naduruniu (Nakavu).

The side takes on the Coastal Herons at 4.30pm.

Naresia, a former Fiji and Suva rep said, “We expect the match to be tough as most of the boys have been playing for Nadi. We have most of the players who came out of secondary schools last year and are ready for big break in rugby.

“They know the transition and should adapt well.”

The side included former Natabua High School sprinter Penaia Naweilulu, Ceva Lutu, Leone Nawai, Josateki Turuva, Jonetani Matewai and New Zealand based Jim Bulitavu.

He thanked the Nadi Rugby Union and Jack’s of Fiji for sponsoring the inaugural franchise competition.

“This is the way forward and gives equal chance to other players. If we have a No. 7 who has been in the Nadi team for six years and cannot perform, I don’t see why the players need to be in the team,” he added.

The coaching panel also includes former Nadi and Naduruniu flanker Apisai Naweilulu.

Meanwhile, the launch of the competition will be held today.

Friday Fixtures:

2.30pm Highlanders – Turbos/Jets;

4.30pm Sharks – Herons; 6.30pm Chiefs – Giants.
