Women and girls are urged to immediately report to Police or the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre (FWCC) if they are insulted by males.

The advice from the FWCC co-coordinator, Shamima Ali was shared to the Fiji Sun.

This was after a Lautoka resident posted on social media yesterday, that a group of male construction workers, opposite her home were ‘cat calling’ her and just recently, to her eldest daughter who currently attends a prominent primary school in Lautoka.

The resident also aired her frustration and said because of such acts by men, she couldn’t walk freely around her own home.

Ms Ali said the issue was common for many women and girls.

“This is a common phenomenon and terrible for women and girls,” she said.

“It happens everywhere – in our homes, in workplaces, on streets, at functions, almost everywhere and no age limit and regardless of whatever females are wearing.”

Ms Ali said laws were now put in place for people who were idisrespecting women and girls.

“I would advise people to file a report to Police or call us to report to us. There are laws against this now,” she said.

“Sexual harassment is rape behavior sexual harassers have the potential to rape.”

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed the incident and said Police officers had spoken to those allegedly involved.
