The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions is compiling papers to extradite from Australia Geeta Anjana Chandar, who is facing trafficking and money laundering charges along with her sister Seta Sanjana Ram.

Ram appeared before High Court judge Justice Daniel Goundar yesterday.

She is charged alongside her sister, Chandar, with 17 counts of trafficking in persons, 16 counts of obtaining property by deception and two counts of money laundering.

The two were alleged to have facilitated the travel of 17 Fijian citizens who were exploited and became victims of human trafficking in New Zealand between April and September 2014 and obtained a total of $52,142 from the 17 complain- ants by deception.

For the money laundering charges, it is alleged thatChandra, between September 2017 and March 2017, disposed of $79,991.40 into a Bank South Pacific account and between February and May 2014 Ram allegedly disposed of $2525 into two Australia and New Zealand bank accounts that were the proceeds of crime.

State lawyer Meli Vosawale told the court that Chandar was still in Australia and was not voluntarily coming back to Fiji. He told the court that Chandar was not an Australian citizen.Justice Goundar said if Geeta Ram voluntarily appeared in court then it would be good for her.

However, if she was extradited then she would remain in custody.

The defence counsel indicated in court that her client would plead not guilty to the charges. Ram also made bail variation in relation to her curfew hours.

The matter has been adjourned to March 1, 2019, for mention to check on the State’s position on extraditing Chandar.
